The Two Architectures
A net-based setup has four parts: hitting mat, launch monitor, net, and a display (TV, monitor, laptop, or tablet) placed beside or behind the hitting area showing the simulation. The ball flies a few feet into the net; the virtual ball continues on the display. A screen-based setup replaces the net and separate display with an impact screen and enclosure plus a projector: the simulation is projected onto the surface you hit into, so the real ball visually becomes the virtual ball mid-flight. Everything else in the two builds is identical, which is the key practical fact: the launch monitor, mat, and software do not care what you hit into. This makes the net-to-screen upgrade path clean. Many builders start with a net and a spare TV, confirm they actually use the simulator, then add the screen, enclosure, and projector a year later, reusing everything else. What the Net Path Does Better
Cost is the obvious advantage, but not the only one. Space tolerance: a net needs less width than a full enclosure (many nets are 7-8 feet wide versus 10+ feet for a comfortable enclosure), no projector throw distance, and no mounting infrastructure. Marginal rooms, garages shared with cars, and setups that must tear down between sessions all favor nets; several good nets fold or pop up in minutes. Brightness immunity: projected images wash out in bright rooms, and garages with windows or open doors fight the projector constantly. A TV beside the net is fully visible in daylight. Simplicity: no projector alignment, no keystone correction, no screen tensioning, one fewer device to update and power. Practice-first users: if your simulator time is mostly range sessions and drills rather than course rounds, the data display matters more than immersion, and a TV shows numbers as well as a projection does. The honest downsides: watching the ball vanish into a net and then finding the flight on a side screen is a split-attention experience; course play loses most of its magic; and guests are visibly less impressed, which matters if the simulator is partly a social space. Nets are also louder than screens on impact, a consideration above bedrooms or shared walls.
What the Screen Path Does Better
Immersion is the entire pitch, and it delivers. Hitting a drive and watching it climb into the projected fairway is qualitatively different from glancing sideways at a TV, and it is the difference between a practice tool and a golf experience. This matters most for course play (a round at a projected Pebble Beach feels like an event; the same round on a side TV feels like a video game), for keeping sessions fun over years (immersion fights the boredom that retires many practice-only setups), and for households where spouses, kids, and guests play (the screen makes the simulator a shared attraction rather than one person's training device). Screens also mute impact noise compared to nets and stop the ball in a shorter depth, and a full enclosure with side netting is the most shank-proof containment there is. The costs beyond money: you need the width and height for an enclosure (roughly 10 feet wide and 9 feet high for comfort), a projector mounting position that avoids both the swing arc and shadow-casting (ceiling mount behind the golfer with a short-throw unit is standard), and light control, because projection quality collapses in bright rooms. Screens are consumables: expect to replace the screen material every one to three years under regular use, a $200-600 recurring cost. And the projector adds a genuine setup tax: alignment, aspect matching, and brightness tuning take an afternoon to get right the first time.
Deciding and Sequencing the Build
Three questions settle the choice for most builders. Question one: is the total budget under about $1,500 including a launch monitor? If yes, the net path is not a compromise, it is the correct allocation: put the money into the best launch monitor you can afford (the sensor determines the experience more than the surface you hit into) and a durable mat, with a net and an existing TV closing the loop. Question two: does the room actually support a screen? Check width (10 feet for a comfortable enclosure), height (9 feet minimum for most adult driver swings), depth (hitting position 8-10 feet from the screen, plus projector throw), and light control. A room that fails any of these produces a frustrating screen setup and a perfectly good net setup. Question three: is this primarily practice or primarily play? Drill-focused golfers on a budget lose little with a net; families and course-round players gain a lot from the screen. The sequencing advice that fits most people: buy the launch monitor, mat, and net first, regardless of your end goal, since every piece carries forward. Live with it for a season. If you find yourself wanting the immersion, add the enclosure, screen, and projector to a setup you already know you use; if the net turns out to serve your needs, you saved four figures. The one mistake to avoid is the reverse order: a beautiful screen enclosure around a cheap launch monitor produces gorgeous pictures of wrong numbers.
