Golf Simulator Room Requirements: Ceiling Height, Width, and Depth

The minimum room dimensions for a home golf simulator, by club type and user height. Includes garage, basement, and spare room specs.

Room requirements vary by what you want to hit. If you only need to hit irons, 8.5 feet of ceiling clearance is enough. For a driver, you need at least 9 feet and ideally 10 feet. Your own height matters too: a 6-foot golfer needs more ceiling clearance than a 5-foot 8 golfer.

Minimum dimensions for a full-swing driver setup: 9 feet wide, 15 feet deep, 9 feet tall. These are true minimums. A comfortable setup needs 12 feet wide, 20 feet deep, 10 feet tall.

Width: 9 feet is the minimum to swing comfortably without hitting your elbow on the side wall. 12 feet gives you enough room to add a seating area on one side. 14 feet fits a full enclosure plus comfortable walkways.

Depth: 15 feet is tight. The ball flight on a driver shot is hard to track accurately when the monitor and screen are this close together. 20 feet is comfortable. The extra depth lets the ball flight appear more natural on screen.

Ceiling: 9 feet is workable for most golfers under 6 feet tall. 10 feet is comfortable for most people. If you have 8.5 feet, you can still use a simulator but should stick to irons and shorter clubs for safety.

For a garage: A standard 2-car garage is 20x20 feet with 8-foot ceilings. The depth is fine but the ceiling is tight. Raising the door creates extra clearance at the front. A 1-car garage (10x20 feet) is too narrow for a comfortable golf swing.
