The screen is where your shot lands and where the course visualization appears. Choosing the wrong material means safety risk, poor image quality, or a screen that wears out in a year. Here is what to know before you buy.

Impact Screen vs Standard Projection Screen: The Core Difference

The fundamental choice in golf simulator screens is between impact-rated screens designed specifically for simulator use and standard projection screens used in home theater setups. This is not a choice between budget and quality in the same product category. It is a choice between two completely different products with different purposes. Standard projection screens are optimized for image quality. They use gain coatings and materials that reflect light efficiently and evenly. They are not designed to absorb energy. A golf ball striking a standard projection screen will either tear through it immediately or bounce back at dangerous speed. Standard projection screens should never be used as golf simulator screens. Impact screens are optimized for absorbing kinetic energy while still projecting a usable image. They use woven polymer materials that flex and dissipate energy on impact. The tradeoff is image quality: impact screen material is less optically optimized than dedicated projection screen material, producing a slightly lower-gain, slightly softer image. The image quality from a good impact screen is entirely acceptable for simulator use; it simply cannot match a dedicated high-gain cinema screen. Within impact screens, there is variation in weave density, material thickness, and surface texture that affects both image quality and durability.

The Major Impact Screen Brands

Carl's Place offers screens in multiple materials at different price points, ranging from budget woven polyester to their premium Preferred Series material. The Preferred Series has a tighter weave that improves image quality while maintaining impact resistance. Carl's Place screens are available in custom sizes and come with grommets for frame attachment. The image quality at their premium tier is considered among the best available in impact screens. True Strike: another well-regarded brand with strong reviews for durability. True Strike screens use a bonded layer construction rather than pure woven material, which some users report produces a slightly smoother image. Shop Indoor Golf (SIG): manufactures impact screens often bundled with their enclosures and projector/launch monitor packages. Their screens are well-reviewed for durability. The projector and software is often the bottleneck in a SIG package, not the screen material. Homemade impact screens: a significant portion of budget home simulator builders make their own screens from ballistic nylon, polyester mesh, or layered fabrics. Some report satisfactory results for use with slower swing speeds. For full-speed driver shots, the safety testing that commercial impact screens receive is difficult to replicate with DIY materials. The risk is not just screen tear but also unpredictable ball rebound.

Frame Construction: How the Screen Mounts Matters

An impact screen needs a frame that holds it under appropriate tension without being so rigid that ball impacts are transmitted to the frame structure. The frame absorbs some of the remaining energy after the screen dissipates most of it. Common frame construction approaches for home simulators: PVC pipe: cheap, easy to work with, readily available. Adequate for lighter screens and lower swing speeds. At very high ball speeds (160+ mph), PVC frame joints can fail on impact. Not recommended for long-term permanent installations with aggressive use. Steel conduit: stronger than PVC at similar cost. Standard building supply. Heavier to work with. Better for permanent installations. Aluminum extrusion: the material used in most commercial enclosure kits (Carl's Place, Shop Indoor Golf). Lightweight, rigid, and available in precisely sized components. The cost premium over PVC is justified for permanent installations. Attachment method matters: screens attach to frames via grommets and bungee cord loops, Velcro, or clip systems. Grommet and bungee is the most common approach. The bungee provides the flex that absorbs ball impacts without transmitting full force to the frame. Tension matters: an over-tensioned screen has less flex and absorbs less energy. An under-tensioned screen droops, which degrades image quality and ball behavior. The correct tension gives the screen a few inches of give under a firm push while maintaining a flat surface for projection.

Image Quality: What to Expect from an Impact Screen

If you have calibrated expectations, impact screen image quality is entirely satisfactory. If you are comparing to a cinema screen or high-gain home theater screen, impact screens will appear softer and less bright. The relevant comparison is not to cinema screens but to what you need to play a round of golf indoors: clear course visualization, readable text for yardages and club data, and an image bright enough to see in a partially-lit room. Brightness requirement: impact screens typically have a gain between 0.8 and 1.2. This means they reflect less light than a standard white wall (gain 1.0 is equivalent to a white wall). A projector with 3,000-4,000 lumens is the typical recommendation for impact screens in spaces that cannot be fully darkened. In a fully dark room, 2,500 lumens is workable. Resolution: impact screens do not limit resolution. A 4K projector will produce a 4K image on an impact screen. The weave texture of the screen material becomes visible at very close distances, but from a normal viewing and playing distance it is not perceptible. Hotspot: some impact screen materials produce a visible bright spot (hotspot) at the center of the image where the projector beam is most concentrated. Premium screen materials minimize this. The projector type (short-throw vs standard-throw) also affects hotspot visibility. Short-throw projectors produce less hotspot because the projection angle is shallower.
