Golf Simulator in an Apartment 2026: What Works and What Does Not

Can you set up a golf simulator in an apartment? Minimum space requirements, the best launch monitors for tight spaces, and how to manage noise and vibration.

Running a golf simulator in an apartment is possible but requires careful planning. Ceiling height, space dimensions, noise, and vibration from impact are the four main constraints. Here is what works in tight spaces and what to avoid.

Minimum Space Requirements

The absolute minimums for a usable golf simulator: 8 feet (2.4m) ceiling height for most swing arcs, 10 feet (3m) depth from the hitting position to the screen (less is possible with short throw projectors or camera-based systems), and 10 feet (3m) width to swing a driver without hitting walls or furniture. A 10x10x8 foot room is genuinely the minimum. A 12x12x9 foot room is comfortable for most golfers. Taller golfers (over 6'2") need higher ceilings -- 9 feet is safer.

Best Launch Monitors for Small Spaces

Camera-based systems like the Foresight GC3 and Garmin R10 work at shorter distances than radar systems. Radar-based systems (Mevo+, TrackMan) need more depth behind the hitting position to accurately read ball flight. For apartments: Foresight GC3 or Bushnell Launch Pro (the consumer version) work well in tight spaces and do not require a full room-length setup.

Noise and Vibration for Apartment Use

The impact sound from hitting into a net or screen is significant and travels through floors and walls. A thick hitting mat (at least 1 inch foam backing) reduces vibration transmission to the floor. Anti-vibration pads under the mat further reduce impact transfer. The projector fan noise is minor; the main neighbor complaint risk is impact sound. If your apartment has concrete floors (common in newer buildings), transmission is lower than wood floors.

Enclosure Options for Apartments

A collapsible golf net (rather than a full screen enclosure) is easier to store and set up in a living space. The Carl's Place DIY enclosure kit and the Shop Indoor Golf enclosures both have apartment-friendly configurations. For a full simulator with projector in an apartment, the most practical setup is a permanent corner installation in a dedicated room or large bedroom -- rather than a living room setup that needs to be assembled and disassembled.
