Golf Simulator Room Setup: Dimensions and Requirements for 2026
Getting the room right is as important as the simulator itself. Here are the minimum dimensions, ceiling heights, and setup considerations for a home golf simulator.
Minimum Room Dimensions
The standard recommendation for a home golf simulator is a minimum ceiling height of 9 feet (2.7 meters), a width of 12 feet (3.6 meters), and a depth of 16 to 20 feet (4.9 to 6 meters). These numbers account for the swing arc of a driver, the screen placement, and enough room behind the golfer for the projector. Taller golfers or those with a wide swing may need more ceiling clearance. Always measure with a club in hand before committing to a space.
Screen Placement
The hitting screen should be placed at least 7 to 9 feet in front of the hitting mat. The closer the screen, the lower the launch angle you can simulate before the ball hits the frame. Most setups use an impact screen of 9 by 7 feet, which requires about 10 feet of width to mount properly with side borders. The projector is typically ceiling-mounted 10 to 15 feet behind the screen, pointing forward.
Flooring and Mat Placement
Concrete or solid flooring is ideal for impact sensors and launch monitors that rely on vibration sensing. The hitting mat should sit level. Some setups use artificial turf over the entire floor both for aesthetics and to protect the concrete. Avoid carpet under the hitting area as it can affect mat stability and sensor readings.
Lighting
Ambient light washes out projector images. Cover windows completely or work in a room without natural light. Use dimmable overhead lighting positioned so it does not shine directly onto the screen. LED strips along the sides create atmosphere without reducing image contrast.
Ventilation
A room used for repeated swings will get warm. Plan for at least one air vent or a small ceiling fan. Good ventilation also protects electronic components from heat buildup during long sessions.
