Your launch monitor shows a dozen numbers per swing, and most simulator owners read two of them. The others explain why the ball did what it did, and reading them is the difference between practicing outcomes and fixing causes. This is the plain-language guide to club data: what each number means, what good looks like, and which ones deserve your attention.
The Collision, Decoded: The Numbers That Cause Ball Flight
Every shot is a collision lasting half a millisecond, and club data is its geometry. Clubhead speed is the energy input: amateur driver speeds cluster from 85 to 105 mph (tour averages around 115), and every mph of clubhead speed is worth roughly 2.5-3 yards of driver carry at decent contact. Smash factor (ball speed divided by clubhead speed) is the efficiency read: 1.48-1.50 with driver means centered contact, while 1.38 means the face donated energy to a heel strike; smash is the fastest single check of strike quality. Attack angle is the vertical delivery: up on the driver (positive numbers launch high with less spin, the distance recipe), down on irons (minus 3-5 compresses ball-then-turf, the crisp-contact recipe); amateurs who hit down on drivers give away 15-25 yards to this number alone. Club path and face angle are the horizontal pair that write start line and curve: the ball starts close to where the face points and curves away from the path, so face-to-path is the curvature dial (zero equals straight, face left of path curves left for a right-hander, and about 2-4 degrees of difference makes a playable draw or fade rather than a bend). Dynamic loft is delivered loft at impact (distinct from the number stamped on the club) and, with attack angle, sets the spin loft that controls trajectory and spin; hands-forward strikers deloft and flight it down, flippers add loft and balloon it. Strike location seasons everything: gear effect on off-center driver strikes adds curvature the face-path numbers do not predict (heel strikes fade extra, toe strikes draw extra), which is why the same swing produces different shapes on different strikes and why strike data or spray belongs in every serious practice session.
What Good Looks Like: Reference Windows by Club
Numbers need norms, so calibrate against realistic windows rather than tour fantasies. Driver, distance-optimized for a 90-100 mph amateur: attack angle 0 to plus 4, launch 13-17 degrees, spin 2,200-2,900 rpm, smash 1.47 plus, path and face within a couple degrees of target and each other; the classic amateur error pattern is minus 3 attack, 3,500 rpm, and a 1.42 smash, which costs 30 yards against the same speed delivered well. Mid-irons (7-iron reference): attack minus 3 to minus 5, dynamic loft delivering launch around 16-19 degrees, spin 6,000-7,500 rpm, and carry consistency mattering far more than peak carry: a 7-iron that flies 150-155-152 beats one that flies 160-138-165 on every course ever built. Wedges: attack steeper, spin 8,000-11,000, and the number to watch is carry dispersion at partial distances, since wedge play is a distance-control contest. Face-to-path across the bag: within plus-minus 2 degrees keeps curvature playable; the slicer trying to become a drawer is watching path move from minus 4 toward plus 2 over weeks, and that visible migration is exactly what club data is for. Two warnings keep the windows honest: entry-level units estimate several of these numbers with error bars wide enough that single-swing readings mislead (judge trends over ten-swing blocks), and mats flatter fat contact, so a beautiful attack-angle number with a smash of 1.30 still means the turf ate the strike. When a number and your eyes disagree, trust the pattern across a session, and when two numbers disagree (great path and face, ugly ball flight), suspect strike location first.
From Numbers to Fixes: The Diagnostic Playbook
Club data earns its price when it routes you to the right fix, so work the common patterns. The slice (ball starts left-ish, curves hard right for a right-hander): data shows path negative (out-to-in) with face open to path; fix path first (feel of swinging to right field, strike drills from an inside takeaway) because chasing the face while the path stays minus 5 just trades a slice for a pull, then time the face to the new path. The hook mirror-images it. The push and pull family: ball flying straight but offline means face and path agree in the wrong direction, usually alignment or setup, the cheapest fix in golf; check where the numbers say you are aimed before rebuilding a swing. Distance loss with decent speed: read smash and strike first (off-center contact), then spin (driver spin above 3,200 at moderate speed means delivery or gear effect is bleeding carry), then attack angle; the fix ladder runs strike, then attack, then equipment loft. Inconsistency as the complaint: pull ten-swing blocks and find which number varies most: carry scatter with stable path and face points at strike (practice center-face before anything else), start-line scatter points at face control (slow-motion release work), curve scatter points at path variability (tempo and sequencing). The meta-rules that make all of this work: change one variable at a time and re-measure, use blocks of ten swings rather than hero singles, film the swing when numbers surprise you (video plus data beats either alone), and write the session note (date, focus, before-after numbers) because the notebook is what converts data into a swing that holds up in April. Practiced this way, club data stops being dashboard decoration and becomes the coach that never gets tired, never guesses, and never lets you lie to yourself about that beautiful one you hit off the toe.
