Golf simulators have come down dramatically in price over the past five years. What once required a $50,000 commercial installation is now achievable at home for under $3,000. If you are a beginner golfer thinking about a home simulator, here is what you actually need to know before spending money.

What a Golf Simulator Actually Does

A golf simulator combines a launch monitor (a device that tracks your ball and club at impact) with an impact screen and simulation software. You swing at a real ball into the screen, the launch monitor measures ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, and direction, and the software calculates where that shot would go on a virtual course. The ball hits the screen and drops into a net. You watch the simulated flight on the screen via a projector.

The key variable is the launch monitor. A $600 device gives you decent ball tracking data. A $10,000 device gives you pro-level data across 20+ parameters. For a beginner, the $600 device captures more than enough information to practice and improve.

The Four Components You Need

Launch monitor: tracks your shot. For beginners: Garmin R10 (~$600) or Rapsodo MLM2PRO (~$500). Both connect via Bluetooth to a phone or tablet. Both measure the essential data: ball speed, launch angle, carry distance, shot shape. The Garmin works with E6 Connect and Garmin Golf. The Rapsodo works with its own app.

Impact screen and net: the screen catches the ball and displays the simulation. A basic screen and net combo starts around $300-500. Better options (Carl's Place, SIG Impact Screens) run $500-1,500 but last significantly longer and display better visuals. Do not buy the absolute cheapest option -- impact screens take thousands of ball strikes and a cheap one will tear quickly.

Projector: displays the simulation on the screen. You do not need an expensive projector to get started. A 1080p projector in the $200-400 range works fine. Short-throw projectors are useful in tighter spaces. If your room depth allows it, a standard projector positioned behind the hitting area is simpler and cheaper.

Simulator software: the program that runs virtual courses and practice ranges. Many launch monitors include a basic software subscription. GSPro ($400 one-time purchase, large course library) is popular for the value. E6 Connect is more polished visually. For pure practice without course play, many golfers use their launch monitor's own app on a phone or tablet without a projector at all.

Minimum Space Requirements

Width: 10 feet minimum, 12-14 preferred. You need clearance for a full swing without hitting walls. Ceiling height: 9 feet minimum. Measure your actual ceiling -- some basements have beams or ductwork that reduces the usable height below the advertised ceiling height. Depth: 12 feet minimum from ball to screen, 15-18 feet is ideal. Most single-car garages (10x20 feet) and two-car garages (20x20 feet) work. Many basements work if the ceiling is high enough.

What to Expect as a Beginner

The simulator gives you instant data on every swing. For a beginner, the most useful metrics are ball speed, launch angle, and carry distance -- these tell you whether you are making solid contact. Shot data improves faster with a simulator than outdoor range practice because the feedback is immediate and consistent. The limitation: simulator practice does not transfer perfectly to the course. You will still need outdoor time for short game, reading greens, and adapting to real conditions. A good starting ratio: two simulator sessions for every one outdoor round or range session.
