Best Golf Simulators for Small Spaces 2026: Setups That Fit Tight Rooms
Limited ceiling height or depth does not mean you cannot build a golf simulator. These setups work in garages, spare rooms, and basements with non-standard dimensions.
What Counts as a Small Space for a Golf Simulator?
A small space is any room where at least one of these is true: ceiling height below 9 feet, room width below 12 feet, or room depth below 16 feet. Each constraint creates a different set of solutions. Low ceilings require modifying your swing. Narrow rooms require left-right clearance management. Short rooms require a short-throw projector or hitting the ball closer to the screen.
Low Ceiling Solutions (8-9 Feet)
With 8-8.5 feet of ceiling height, you can still hit irons and wedges. Driver swings become the challenge. Options: (1) use a shorter shaft driver or 3-wood as your "driver" in the simulator, (2) adjust your address posture slightly, (3) use a side-on swing track to confirm your clearance before your first live swing.
Some simulators have a "punch shot" mode that registers full-speed iron swings as driver shots for distance simulation purposes. This lets you use a compact swing in a low-ceilinged room.
Narrow Room Solutions (8-10 Feet Wide)
In an 8-foot wide room, a right-handed golfer can swing if the hitting position is centered and the follow-through moves forward (toward the screen) rather than to the right. Place the hitting mat slightly right of center so the follow-through has room. Check your club at full extension: there should be 18 inches between the club head and the nearest wall.
Shallow Room Solutions (Under 14 Feet Deep)
The most practical solution is an ultra-short-throw projector, which can produce a large image from 1-2 feet. This lets you place the hitting mat 6-7 feet from the screen. UST projectors from BenQ (LU951ST) and Sony (VPL-FHZ65) are commonly used. Alternatively, use a large TV instead of a projector; a 75-inch 4K TV displays simulator output adequately and needs no throw distance.
Recommended Setups for Small Spaces
The most compact functional setup: SkyTrak+ launch monitor (camera-based, works in tight spaces), an 8x10 foot impact screen, an ultra-short-throw projector, and a 10x10 foot net enclosure. Total room requirement: approximately 10 feet wide x 14 feet deep x 8.5 feet high. You will be limited to irons and wedges, but you can play full rounds and practice your short game effectively.
