The Real Problem with Wedges
Most golfers know roughly how far they hit their 7-iron. Ask them how far they hit a three-quarter pitching wedge or a half-swing gap wedge, and you get guesses. This is where strokes are dropped: not from bad mechanics, but from not knowing which swing to make for which distance.
A golf simulator solves this problem with precision. Hit 10 shots at a given swing length and you have a reliable average carry distance. Do this systematically for each wedge and each swing percentage, and you emerge with a distance matrix that removes most of the guesswork from inside 120 yards.
Setting Up a Wedge Distance Calibration Session
Before any creative practice, run this calibration protocol:
- Use your actual wedge set: pitching wedge, gap wedge (if you have one), sand wedge, and lob wedge.
- For each club, hit 10 shots at 50% swing effort, then 10 at 75%, then 10 at 100%.
- Discard the two worst and two best from each set of 10. Average the remaining six.
- Record: carry distance and total distance for each combination.
The result is your personal wedge distance matrix. A typical set of numbers might look like: PW full = 130 yards, PW 75% = 108 yards, PW 50% = 82 yards; GW full = 120 yards, GW 75% = 99 yards, GW 50% = 74 yards; SW full = 105 yards, SW 75% = 88 yards, SW 50% = 65 yards; LW full = 88 yards, LW 75% = 70 yards, LW 50% = 52 yards.

Spin Rate Benchmarks
Your simulator will show spin rate for each shot. Use these as quality indicators:
- Full pitching wedge: 8,000 to 10,000 rpm is normal for amateur golfers. Under 7,000 rpm suggests a sweep or a worn groove issue.
- Full sand wedge: 7,000 to 9,500 rpm.
- Full lob wedge: 8,500 to 11,000 rpm for clean contact with a premium ball.
- Half-swing shots: 5,000 to 8,000 rpm depending on technique and contact quality.
If your spin rates are consistently low, check three things first: the ball (tour balls spin 2,000 to 3,000 rpm more than distance balls on wedges), your groove condition (worn grooves lose spin dramatically), and your contact (thin or fat contact reduces spin regardless of equipment).
Practice Drills for Simulator Wedge Sessions
Gap-Filling Drill
Identify the exact distance gaps in your wedge matrix. If you can hit 82 yards with PW at 50% and 99 yards with GW at 75%, you have a gap from 83 to 98 yards. Pick a target at 90 yards and practice until you find a swing that reliably delivers it. The simulator gives you instant feedback on whether 90 yards is landing at 90 yards.
Random Distance Pressure Drill
Write 10 target distances on slips of paper, covering the range of your wedge game (say, 50 to 120 yards in 7-yard increments). Draw one at random, commit to a club and swing, and hit. Compare result to target. Score yourself 3 points for within 5 yards, 1 point for within 10 yards. This drill builds decision-making under mild pressure rather than the comfortable repetition of hitting the same shot repeatedly.
Trajectory Control Set
Pick one target distance. Hit three shots in succession: one intentionally higher than normal (more loft, softer landing), one at your standard trajectory, one lower (punch-style, more roll). The simulator will show how trajectory choices affect carry vs. total distance. This builds versatility for wind conditions and course situations.
What Simulators Cannot Replicate for Wedge Practice
Be honest about limitations. A mat does not give you feedback on turf interaction: whether you are picking the ball clean or taking a divot. Tight lies, thick rough, and bunkers require real-course time to practice. Wind, which dramatically affects wedge shots, is absent in most indoor simulator settings. Use your simulator time for mechanics, distance calibration, and swing consistency, then take those calibrated numbers to the course.
