Golf Simulator Space Requirements: Width, Depth, and Height You Need

Planning a simulator room means knowing the minimum dimensions for a safe, functional setup. Here are the exact space requirements based on swing arc and equipment placement.

The Three Dimensions That Matter

A golf simulator needs sufficient width for a full swing, depth for safe ball flight before the screen, and height for the club arc at the top of the backswing and follow-through. All three dimensions must be adequate, but ceiling height (covered in a separate guide) is typically the first constraint people run into.

Room Width Requirements

A right-handed golfer's swing arc extends to the left and right of the ball. The club head travels in a wide arc, and the butt of the club also needs clearance. Minimum width for a right-handed golfer: 12 feet (366 cm). This gives approximately 3 feet of clearance to the right of the ball position and about 6 feet to the left for the follow-through. 14 feet is comfortable; 16 feet allows left-handed and right-handed golfers to both use the setup without repositioning the mat.

Room Depth Requirements

Depth is measured from the impact screen to the back wall. The golfer stands at the hitting mat, which should be approximately 10 to 12 feet from the impact screen. This distance ensures the ball travels far enough before hitting the screen to be accurately tracked by the launch monitor. Behind the golfer, you need at least 5 to 6 feet for a safe backswing. Minimum total room depth: 16 to 18 feet. 20 feet is comfortable and allows for projector floor-mounting behind the golfer.

Projector Placement and Throw Distance

Short-throw projectors (throw ratio under 0.6) can be placed 3 to 5 feet from the screen. Standard throw projectors need 10 to 15 feet. If your room is too shallow for a standard throw projector, a short-throw model eliminates this constraint. The projector must be positioned so it is not in the golfer's swing path, which typically means ceiling mounting or placing it very close to the screen.
