Lighting is one of the most overlooked aspects of golf simulator room design. Get it wrong and your projected image looks washed out, your room feels uncomfortable to practice in, and your whole setup underperforms. Here is how to get it right.

Why Lighting Matters More Than Most People Think

When planning a home golf simulator, most people spend considerable time on the launch monitor choice, the screen size, the projector specs, and the software. Lighting is an afterthought -- until they turn on the simulator and find the image barely visible against a bright white wall. The issue: projectors compete with ambient light. A 3,000-lumen projector in a fully dark room produces a bright, vivid image. The same projector in a room with overhead fluorescent lights looks pale and washed out. This is not a projector problem -- it is a lighting problem. The second lighting issue is safety and comfort. A completely dark room is not ideal for swinging a golf club. You need to see the floor, the boundaries of your hitting bay, your equipment, and any people in the room. The solution is layered, dimmable lighting that you can adjust between "room mode" (setting up, checking equipment, cleaning) and "play mode" (dimmed enough to let the image pop but bright enough to be safe).

The Lighting Setup That Works

The setup that most simulator builders settle on after experimentation: recessed LED downlights on dimmer switches as the primary light source. Position these above the hitting area and behind the hitting position -- not in front of or to the sides of the screen where they would create screen glare or washout. Aim for 2-4 recessed lights per standard simulator bay (roughly 10x10 foot space), each on a dimmer. LED bulbs at 3000-3500K (warm white to neutral white) strike the best balance between visibility and comfortable atmosphere. For play mode, set them to 40-60% brightness. This lights the room well enough to see clearly but dims enough that the projected image is vivid. For room mode (cleaning, equipment check, guest use), set to 100%. Supplementary options that work well: LED strip lighting under the ceiling perimeter or along the side walls. This adds atmosphere without contributing to screen washout because the strips are not pointed at the screen. Smart lighting systems (Philips Hue, Lutron Caseta) allow you to program scenes: one button for play mode, one for room mode, one for maximum cleaning light. The convenience is genuinely useful if you use the simulator daily.

Blackout Control: Windows and Wall Color

Room lighting is only half the equation. Natural light from windows is often the bigger washout culprit because sunlight is far brighter than any artificial light. A room with uncovered windows on a sunny day makes even a 5,000-lumen projector look dim. Blackout curtains or blackout roller shades are the standard solution. Heavy thermal blackout curtains cost $30-80 per window and block near-total daylight. Blackout roller shades are cleaner-looking and easier to open and close. If the window is directly facing the screen or the hitting area, consider making blackout treatment permanent (a wall panel, blackout film on the glass, or framing it out if you are doing a dedicated build). Wall color matters more than most simulator builders realize. White or light-colored walls behind and beside the screen reflect projected light back onto the screen from odd angles, reducing contrast and creating a foggy look. Painting the walls behind and beside the screen flat black or a very dark color (charcoal, navy) eliminates this bounce. The ceiling near the screen area also benefits from a darker treatment. Some simulator rooms paint the entire room dark; others only treat the wall area immediately surrounding the screen. Both approaches work.

Projector Brightness vs. Room Darkening: Which Matters More?

The answer: room darkening has higher leverage per dollar. Blackout curtains on two windows cost $80-150 and can dramatically improve image quality. Upgrading from a 3,000-lumen projector to a 5,000-lumen projector to compensate for bright room conditions costs $300-800 more. The math usually favors darkening the room over buying a brighter projector. That said, if you cannot fully darken the room (common in basements with high windows, or rooms that double as living space), a higher-lumen projector is necessary. For rooms that cannot be darkened below moderate ambient light, target 4,000+ lumens and a short-throw projector to minimize the throw distance (shorter throw means a brighter image on the screen). High-gain screens (gain of 1.5-2.5) reflect projected light more efficiently toward the viewer and can compensate partially for ambient light. The trade-off: high-gain screens have a narrower viewing cone and can create hotspots if the projector is not perfectly centered. For a single-viewer hitting bay where the projector is on-axis, high-gain screens work well. For a room where people stand to the sides to watch, a lower-gain screen with better off-axis performance is preferable.

Practical Lighting Checklist Before You Build

Before finalizing your simulator room plan: identify every light source in the room (overhead fixtures, windows, lamps, indicator lights on equipment). Determine which ones can be controlled (dimmer switch, blackout curtain) and which cannot. For any windows in the room, plan blackout treatment as a default. Decide whether you want smart lighting or simple dimmers -- both work, smart lighting is more convenient for frequent users. Plan light fixture placement so no fixture is between the projector and the screen, and no fixture shines directly onto the screen face. Consider the projector brightness you need: if you can achieve near-dark conditions, 2,000-3,000 lumens is sufficient. If you cannot dark the room fully, target 4,000+ lumens. Dark-paint the wall area immediately surrounding the screen as a minimum. If you want full room treatment, dark walls throughout significantly improve the experience. Build in a scene: "play mode" at 40-50% on warm-white dimmers is the target. Test it before finishing the room by hanging temporary blackout material and using a portable LED lamp on a dimmer to simulate the final setup.
