Golf Simulator Room Dimensions: Minimum Requirements in 2026

What room size do you need for a home golf simulator in 2026? Minimum ceiling height, width, depth, and how to calculate your space for different launch monitor types.

The Three Critical Dimensions

A golf simulator requires three minimum dimensions: ceiling height (the most commonly underestimated), width, and depth. Getting any one of these wrong means you either can't swing freely, can't fit the impact screen, or can't get enough ball flight for the launch monitor to accurately track the shot.

Ceiling Height

Minimum ceiling height: 2.7 meters (about 9 feet) for shorter players using irons. Recommended: 3 meters (10 feet) or more. For taller players (over 185cm / 6'1") with a full driver swing: 3.2-3.5 meters is more comfortable. Where most people make mistakes: measuring at the lowest point of the room, not accounting for recessed lighting or ductwork that hangs down, and forgetting that the golf swing is performed with the head at full upright position. If your ceiling is 2.7 meters, test your driver swing in the space before committing -- raise your arms fully in your backswing position and see if there's clearance.

Width

Minimum width: 3.6 meters (12 feet). Recommended: 4.5-5 meters. This needs to accommodate the full swing arc from both sides (right and left-handed players if relevant), the impact screen (typically 2.7-3.6 meters wide), and some clearance on each side. A 3.6 meter wide room is workable but feels tight -- you'll notice it more on shots where you feel cramped.

Depth (Room Length)

The required depth depends on your launch monitor type and the distance it needs from the hitting position to the screen. Photometric launch monitors (SkyTrak, Bushnell Launch Pro): can be placed right next to the hitting mat, so the minimum depth is: hitting area (1.5m) + ball flight to screen (1.5-2m minimum) + screen thickness. Total minimum: ~3.5 meters. Radar launch monitors (Garmin R10): typically need to be placed behind the ball, requiring more depth. For a radar setup: 4.5-5 meters depth is more practical. Always consult your specific launch monitor's requirements -- every model has different distance requirements.

Calculating Your Space

Step 1: measure your room precisely including ceiling height at all points. Step 2: identify the hitting position (where you'll stand). Step 3: measure from hitting position to where the screen will be. Step 4: check if any overhead obstructions (lights, pipes) are in the swing path. If you're borderline on dimensions, a 3D CAD mockup is worth the hour it takes -- several free tools (like SketchUp) let you model the space before buying anything.
