How to practice putting on a golf simulator: what the sensor system actually measures, drills that transfer to the course, the best putting mats and attachments, and which putting problems a simulator can and cannot fix.

Putting is 40% of golf and the most improvable part of the game with deliberate practice. Here is how to use a golf simulator setup to actually get better at it -- and what the simulator cannot replace.

What a Simulator Actually Measures on Putts

A golf simulator tracks your putter using the same sensor technology it uses for full shots, but the physics model is different. For full shots, the ball is actually hit and the sensors measure it in flight. For putts, the ball rolls across a mat (not real grass) and the simulator reads the putter head data -- face angle, path, and sometimes impact location on the face -- then calculates where the ball would travel on a virtual green with the physical properties the software has assigned it. The data you get from a simulator putt: face angle at impact, stroke path (in-to-out, square, out-to-in), impact location on the face, and the resulting virtual ball roll. What this tells you: if you consistently start putts right of your target, is it face angle at impact or your stroke path or your aim? The simulator can isolate these variables. What a simulator cannot tell you: whether your green reading is accurate, how your putting stroke responds to grain and slope underfoot, or whether you can replicate your practice stroke when a putt actually matters.

Setting Up for Effective Putting Practice

A standard simulator setup is not optimized for putting practice out of the box. Most hitting mats have a small designated putting zone that is flat, uniform, and the same speed every session. That is useful for mechanics work and counterproductive for learning to read or feel different surfaces. Improvements that make simulator putting more useful: a longer putting mat (6-15 feet rather than the 2-4 foot zone in most simulator mats) gives you the space to practice lag putting and distance control at realistic lengths. A slight slope in the mat creates some break to practice, though artificial slopes do not replicate real green grain and compaction. Adding a putting analyzer (Exputt, SAM PuttLab, or the app-based Blast Motion sensor) gives you data the simulator itself may not provide, particularly impact position on the face and shaft lean at impact. The Exputt RG is the most popular home option: it sits on the mat, uses your iPhone camera, and produces stroke data comparable to what golf instructors use in putting lessons.

Drills That Transfer from Simulator to Course

Not all putting practice transfers from simulator mat to real green. The drills that do transfer: gate drills (two tees set slightly wider than the putter face, putt through without touching) train face awareness that works on any surface. Distance control drills (hitting a target distance rather than a hole) train tempo and acceleration, which transfers to any green speed if recalibrated. Single-hand drills (right hand only, left hand only) train individual muscle engagement in ways that carry over to the full stroke. The drill that transfers least well: reading break on a simulator. Virtual greens are modeled with mathematical slopes, real greens have grain, wet spots, worn paths, and micro-undulations that change how the ball rolls. You cannot practice green reading on a simulator in any meaningful way. The recommendation: use your simulator for stroke mechanics (30-40 minutes working on face angle and path) and spend separate time on a real green or a quality putting mat with realistic surface for feel and green reading.

The Most Common Putting Problems a Simulator Can Fix

Three putting problems respond well to simulator and mat practice: pulling putts left (caused by face angle pointing left at impact, often combined with an out-to-in stroke path). The simulator quantifies whether the problem is path or face, which changes what drill fixes it. Inconsistent pace on long putts (caused by inconsistent stroke length or acceleration pattern). Distance control drills on a consistent mat surface reveal the pattern because the surface is the same every time. Short putt misses when the pressure is on (sometimes caused by stroke path changes, sometimes by face angle, sometimes by grip tension). Video of your practice stroke alongside your stroke data can identify whether mechanics or tension is the variable. What a simulator cannot fix: the mental side of putting. A golfer who holes everything on the mat but misses short putts on the course usually has a mental pattern (decelerating through impact under pressure) that requires psychological practice, not mechanical practice.

Putting Software Features Worth Paying For

If you are buying a simulator partly for putting practice, software features matter. Look for: virtual green break that responds to actual slope data rather than random computer generation (E6 Connect and WGT Golf are the best at this), hole locations that can be customized for different par-3 approaches, practice mode putting drills with distance gates and par games, and data export so you can track putting statistics across sessions. The simulators with the best putting physics and software: Trackman (most accurate, most expensive), Full Swing (used by many PGA Tour players), and the mid-range options including Foresight Sports GCQuad or GC3 systems running E6 software. For home simulators in the $3,000-$8,000 range, the software choice (TGC 2019, E6 Connect, GSPro) often matters more than the sensor hardware for putting quality -- these platforms have put significantly more development into their virtual green physics than some older platforms.
