Impact Screen: Cleaning and Longevity
The impact screen takes the most abuse in any golf simulator setup. Every shot transfers force, dirt, and abrasion to the screen surface. The cleaning rule is simple: microfiber cloth, damp with water, after every 5-10 hours of use. For stubborn ball marks from range balls, a 10:1 water-to-dish-soap solution removes residue without damaging the screen coating. Avoid alcohol-based products, paper towels, and anything abrasive. The biggest longevity factor is ball quality. Scuffed range balls and balls with cuts on the cover are significantly harder on screen material than clean premium balls. If you use range balls regularly, expect the impact zone to show wear faster. Inspect the screen at the impact zone monthly for early signs of thinning or fiber separation -- catching this early lets you plan a replacement rather than having a screen fail mid-session.
Projector Maintenance: What Actually Matters
The projector is often neglected until image quality degrades visibly. Two maintenance tasks matter most: filter cleaning and lens care. Most golf simulator projectors have a dust filter that should be cleaned or replaced every 3-6 months depending on how dusty your space is. A clogged filter causes the projector to run hot, which shortens bulb and component life. Check the manufacturer spec sheet for filter access -- it is usually a slide-out panel. For the lens: monthly compressed air to remove dust, then a lens cloth if needed. Never touch the lens surface with fingers. Fingerprint oil attracts dust and is difficult to remove cleanly. For lamp projectors (still common in older setups), track lamp hours. Most projectors display cumulative lamp hours in the settings menu. Launch Monitor Care: Keep the Sensors Clean
Launch monitors require less maintenance than other components but are the most expensive to repair or replace. The primary maintenance task is keeping the sensing element clean. For radar-based units (Mevo+, Trackman), this means keeping the radar window free of dust and debris -- a monthly wipe with a dry microfiber cloth is all that is needed. For camera-based units (GC3, GC Quad), the camera lenses are the critical element. Monthly compressed air to remove dust, lens cloth if any smearing is visible. Never touch a camera lens with bare fingers. Store the launch monitor in its case between sessions if possible, especially in environments with high dust or temperature fluctuation. Mounting is also maintenance: camera-based units calibrated to a specific position drift if the mount vibrates loose over time. Check mounting hardware monthly and re-verify calibration if you notice shot data that seems off.
Floor Mat: The Component That Wears Fastest
Golf simulator mats take continuous impact and shear stress from swings. Maintenance is simple -- vacuum or sweep after every session -- but replacement planning matters. The hitting area of a mat degrades faster than the edges because every shot concentrates wear in the same 12-inch zone. Once you see the artificial turf fibers thinning or the rubber backing starting to show through, replace the mat rather than waiting for it to fail completely. A worn mat produces inconsistent ball lie and can cause wrist impact from swing-through on shots where the club catches the degraded surface. Rotate the mat occasionally if the design allows it -- even a 180-degree rotation can distribute wear more evenly and extend mat life by several months. For premium mats with divot strips (replaceable hitting strips): keep spare strips on hand and replace them when the fibers wear flat, which is much cheaper than replacing the entire mat.
Software and Calibration: Annual Maintenance
Once a year, do a full system check: update all software (launch monitor firmware, simulator software, PC drivers), verify projector image alignment and recalibrate if needed, check all cable connections for wear, and do a calibration verification session where you compare your simulator data against known real-world performance. This last step catches subtle sensor drift before it affects your practice sessions. Keep a maintenance log -- a simple spreadsheet with dates of cleaning, filter changes, lamp hours, and any calibration events. When something goes wrong, this log helps you and any support technician identify the cause faster than starting from scratch.
