Radar, camera, and infrared: how golf simulator launch monitors actually work in 2026, which technology each major unit uses, and which fits your setup.

Why Technology Choice Matters for Your Setup

A launch monitor that is excellent outdoors may be mediocre indoors. A unit designed for simulator use may not work at all on a driving range. Understanding the underlying technology tells you which units fit your specific setup before you spend $500 to $25,000.

Doppler Radar: How It Works

Doppler radar launch monitors emit a continuous radar signal and measure the frequency shift of the signal reflected off the moving ball. Because radar frequency shifts proportionally to velocity (the Doppler effect), the unit can calculate ball speed, launch angle, azimuth, and by analyzing the spin-induced wobble in the radar return, backspin and sidespin.

TrackMan 4 and FlightScope X3 are the premium radar units. They are the most accurate launch monitors ever built for outdoor use, used on the PGA Tour and in professional club fitting.

The indoor limitation: Radar accuracy improves with longer ball flight. TrackMan recommends at least 8 feet of unobstructed ball travel for accurate spin measurement. In a tight simulator bay, accuracy drops, particularly for spin axis (which determines shot shape). TrackMan explicitly recommends their indoor-specific setup configurations and caveats for confined spaces.

Camera-Based (Photometric) Systems: How They Work

Camera-based launch monitors use high-speed cameras (typically shooting at 10,000 frames per second or faster) to capture the ball and club face at the moment of impact. Impact stickers on the ball add reference dots that the cameras track across frames to calculate spin rate and spin axis.

Because the measurement happens at impact rather than during ball flight, these systems work equally well in a 10-foot deep bay or on an outdoor range.

Foresight Sports GC3 and GCQuad use three and four cameras respectively. GC3 ($7,000) covers all parameters needed for simulation. GCQuad ($15,000) adds a fourth camera for the most precise club face and path data available outside of a motion capture lab.

Uneekor QED and EYE XO use overhead cameras mounted to the ceiling of the enclosure. This overhead position eliminates the need for impact stickers: the cameras see the ball from directly above, using the ball's seams as reference markers.

Infrared Sensor Arrays: How They Work

Infrared launch monitors project a grid of invisible infrared beams across the hitting zone. When the club and ball pass through the beams, they interrupt the signal. By timing how the ball breaks each beam in sequence, the unit calculates ball speed, launch angle, and club head speed.

Spin calculation is indirect in infrared systems: it is estimated from the combination of ball speed, launch angle, and trajectory rather than measured directly. This is the core reason infrared units are less accurate for spin data than camera or radar systems.

The original SkyTrak used infrared-based measurement. The current SkyTrak+ has moved to a camera-based approach, which substantially improved spin accuracy.

Which Technology Is Right for Your Simulator?

For a dedicated simulator bay (room depth 15 to 25 feet, permanent setup): camera-based units are the best fit. GC3 or Uneekor QED if budget allows; SkyTrak+ for the budget-conscious builder who still wants camera accuracy.

For a portable setup used both indoors and outdoors: the Rapsodo MLM2 Pro's hybrid approach covers both well at its price point. Garmin R10 is radar-only and works best outdoors or in larger indoor spaces.

For professional or commercial use: Foresight GCQuad or TrackMan 4. Both give data accurate enough for club fitting. TrackMan requires more room; GCQuad does not.
