Golf Simulator Launch Monitor Accuracy Guide 2026
Not all launch monitors are equally accurate. This guide explains which metrics matter, how accuracy is measured, and what the data actually means for improving your game.
What Does Launch Monitor Accuracy Actually Mean?
Launch monitors measure ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, and carry distance. Accuracy varies significantly between consumer and professional-grade devices. A monitor that is accurate to within 1 mph of ball speed is excellent; one that varies by 5 mph will give you misleading feedback about what your swing is actually doing.
Radar vs Camera-Based Systems
Radar-based monitors (Trackman, FlightScope, Bushnell Launch Pro) measure the ball in flight using Doppler radar. They are highly accurate for ball flight data. Camera-based systems (GCQuad, SkyTrak+, Foresight GC3) photograph the ball at impact and calculate metrics from the images. They tend to be more accurate for spin measurements. Most premium simulators use one or the other, and both are accurate enough for effective practice.
Which Metrics Matter Most
Ball speed is the most important metric because it directly determines distance potential. Club head speed matters for fitting decisions. Spin rate matters for understanding trajectory and stopping power. Launch angle, combined with spin, determines carry distance. Do not obsess over every number. Focus on the metrics most relevant to the swing change you are working on.
Consumer vs Professional Grade
Professional-grade monitors (Trackman 4, GCQuad) cost ,000 to ,000 and are used on Tour. Consumer monitors (SkyTrak, Mevo+, Garmin R10) cost to ,000. For home simulator use, consumer monitors are accurate enough for meaningful improvement. The gap between professional and consumer accuracy matters more on Tour than in your garage.
