Iron fitting is the most impactful club fitting session for the majority of golfers. Most amateur players hit irons more often than drivers and with more scoring consequences. A simulator fitting session gives you the data to choose the right shaft, lie angle, and head design in 45-90 minutes.

Setting Up the Iron Fitting Session

Start with your current 7-iron. Hit 10 shots from a neutral mat lie and record the average and standard deviation of ball speed, carry distance, launch angle, total spin, and side spin. This baseline tells you two things: where your current equipment is performing and how consistent you are. Consistency -- measured by standard deviation -- is often more telling than peak numbers.

A standard deviation of 8 yards on carry distance means your 7-iron lands within a 16-yard window most of the time. A fitting session should reduce that, either by finding a shaft that suits your tempo better, or by identifying a head design that performs better on off-center strikes.

Shaft Fitting: The Biggest Variable

Shaft flex and weight are the variables with the largest effect on iron performance. Heavy shafts (100-120 grams, common in players irons) produce lower spin and suit swing speeds above 95 mph. Light shafts (65-85 grams, common in game-improvement irons) produce higher launch and suit swing speeds below 90 mph. The wrong shaft weight is the most common cause of inconsistency in iron play.

Test at least two shaft weights in the same head. Comparing your current shaft against a 10-gram heavier and 10-gram lighter option typically reveals a clear preference within 20 shots. Then test flex within the chosen weight range: in general, a shaft that feels too stiff produces low ball flight; a shaft that feels too soft produces high, spinny shots with less penetration.

Lie Angle and Its Effect on Ball Direction

Lie angle is the angle between the shaft and the ground at address. An upright lie angle causes the toe of the club to be off the ground, producing shots that go left (for right-handers). A flat lie angle causes the heel to be off the ground, producing shots that go right. One degree of lie angle change alters ball direction by approximately 3-4 yards at 150 yards.

Simulators measure face angle at impact but do not directly measure lie angle. The best way to test lie angle is a lie board: strike the ball through the board and see where the tape mark falls on the sole. If marks are consistently at the toe, the lie is too flat; consistently at the heel, too upright. Most iron sets can be bent to adjust lie angle by 2-3 degrees.

Head Design: Blades vs Game-Improvement

A simulator shows whether a more forgiving head design actually improves your averages. Test a cavity-back iron and a players iron of comparable loft in the same session and compare: average carry, standard deviation, and launch. Most golfers with handicaps above 10 see measurable consistency improvements from game-improvement irons. Better players often prefer the feedback and workability of a blade, even if the data shows marginal carry differences.

The simulator removes the guesswork: if the cavity back gives you tighter dispersion with no carry penalty, the choice is data-backed rather than psychological.

Gapping: Making Sure Your Irons Cover the Right Distances

A complete iron fitting session should include measuring carry distances for each iron in the set. Target gap between irons: 10-15 yards. If your 6-iron and 7-iron carry the same distance, one of them is redundant. Common gapping issues: the long irons (3-4 iron) carry the same distance as hybrids already in the bag; or the short irons (PW and 9-iron) are too close together. Record the carry distance for each iron and adjust lofts or replace clubs based on the gaps the data shows.
