The Three Numbers That Drive Distance

Attack angle is the angle the club is moving at impact. A positive attack angle (hitting slightly up on the ball) is ideal for driver. Tour averages sit around +3 to +4 degrees. Most recreational golfers hit down on the driver at -2 to -4 degrees. That negative angle increases spin, reduces launch efficiency, and costs 20-40 yards. Smash factor is ball speed divided by club head speed. The maximum allowed by the USGA is 1.50. Tour players consistently hit 1.48 to 1.50. The most efficient way to work on attack angle in a simulator is to pick a number and chase it over a 30-minute session. If your baseline is -3 degrees, try to get to -1 degrees by teeing the ball slightly higher and positioning it off your lead heel. The simulator gives you immediate feedback. You do not have to guess whether the change worked.

Common adjustments that shift attack angle positive:

  • Tee the ball one quarter inch higher than normal
  • Move the ball two inches forward in your stance
  • Feel like you are hitting the top half of the ball
  • Widen your stance slightly to lower your center of gravity

Smash Factor Drills on a Simulator

If your smash factor is below 1.45, the priority is center contact rather than swing speed. A useful drill: hit 20 balls in the simulator focusing only on making contact in the center of the face. Use foot spray or impact tape to see where you are actually making contact. The difference between consistent center contact and off-heel or off-toe contact can be worth 10-15 mph of ball speed, which translates to 30-40 yards of carry.

Do not add swing speed work until your smash factor is consistently above 1.46. Faster swing speed with poor contact produces the same distance as slower speed with good contact, and usually with worse accuracy.
