Most golfers buy clubs off the shelf without custom fitting, then blame their swing when results are inconsistent. A simulator fitting session changes the equation: you hit real shots, collect real data, and let the numbers tell you what the fitting room cannot.

Why Simulator Fittings Outperform Visual Fittings

A visual eye-fitting estimates what a club should do based on your swing characteristics and body measurements. A simulator-based fitting measures what the club actually does. The difference matters for shaft flex, lie angle, loft adjustments, and head selection. Launch monitor data eliminates guesswork.

Modern launch monitors used in simulator fitting sessions measure: ball speed, spin rate, launch angle, attack angle, club path, face angle at impact, and carry distance. This gives a fitter data to optimize across all variables simultaneously rather than adjusting one at a time by feel.

The Custom Fitting Session Workflow

Step 1: Establish your baseline

Before testing any new equipment, hit 10 shots with your current clubs and log the averages. This baseline tells you what you are replacing and what needs to improve. Key baseline metrics: average carry distance, average spin rate, dispersion pattern (are you consistently missing left or right?), and peak height.

Step 2: Identify your primary gap

Where does your game lose the most strokes? If it is driver distance, optimize for ball speed and optimal launch conditions. If it is iron consistency, optimize for dispersion. If it is scoring iron precision, optimize for distance gapping and trajectory control. Do not try to fix everything in one session.

Step 3: Test shaft options systematically

Change one variable at a time. If you are testing shaft flex, keep the head the same. If you are testing head options, keep the shaft the same. Most golfers test too many variables simultaneously and cannot isolate what actually improved their numbers.

Step 4: Collect statistical data, not highlights

Hit at least 8 to 10 shots per option and compare averages. A single great shot with a new shaft is not evidence that the shaft is better. Consistent averages and tighter dispersion across 10 shots is evidence. Most launch monitor software calculates averages and dispersion automatically.

Driver Custom Fitting Data Points

For driver fitting in a simulator session, the target metrics for most golfers are: launch angle 10 to 14 degrees, spin rate 2200 to 2600 rpm, attack angle slightly upward (+2 to +4 degrees promotes low spin and high launch). If your launch angle is high and spin is high, try a lower-lofted driver head with a lower kick-point shaft. If launch is low, add loft or use a higher kick-point shaft.

Iron Fitting: Gapping and Shaft Selection

Iron fitting in a simulator has two goals: correct gapping and correct trajectory control. Gapping means ensuring even distance gaps between clubs (a 10 to 12 yard gap per iron is standard). If your 7-iron and 8-iron carry the same distance, your gapping is broken and no amount of swing improvement fixes it without addressing the equipment.

Shaft flex for irons is determined by swing speed at the 7-iron: under 100 mph ball speed, use regular flex. 100 to 115 mph, use stiff. Over 115 mph, consider extra stiff. Lie angle affects direction: too flat causes right misses, too upright causes left misses. A simulator shows your shot pattern and a fitter can infer lie angle from it.

Recording and Using Your Fitting Data

Most simulator software allows you to export session data. Save it. Your optimal specs (shaft flex, lie angle, loft, grip size) are useful reference for future purchases and for working with a club builder. If you buy clubs without a fitting later, match these specs as closely as possible in the off-the-shelf configurations available.
