Course Management Basics

Course management is the art of decision-making on each shot. The best course managers do not always hit the most aggressive shot. They think about miss patterns, hazard positions, and the shot they want to hit into each green, working backward from the pin to the tee.

Using the Simulator for Course Strategy

Most golf simulators include real course data with accurate distances, hazard placement, and green contours. Play a course you are about to play in real life and deliberately practice conservative routing. When you reach a hole with water on the right, aim for the left half of the fairway even if it leaves a longer approach. Track your scores on conservative vs. aggressive lines.

Understanding Your Miss Pattern

If you consistently miss right with a driver, the safe play off a tee with water on the right is a 3-wood or iron aimed at the left half of the fairway. Your simulator data shows your shot dispersion. Use it to define your personal miss pattern, then route each hole to put your misses in the least dangerous position.

Lay-Up Decisions

The break-even point for laying up vs. going for it in two is often misunderstood. If you attempt a long par-5 in two and fail, you often face a chip from a difficult lie with a full swing to the green. A deliberate lay-up to a known yardage in a known location gives you a consistent third shot. Track your up-and-down percentage from lay-up distances in the simulator.
