Golf Simulator Room Dimensions: What You Actually Need

Not every room works for a golf simulator. This guide gives exact minimum and ideal dimensions for ceiling height, width, and depth based on your swing.

The Minimum Room Size for a Golf Simulator

The most cited minimum for a golf simulator is 10 feet wide by 15 feet deep by 9 feet tall. These are true minimums. They work for shorter golfers with compact swings. A 6-foot-2 golfer with a full shoulder-turn will clip the ceiling or side walls in this space. Before spending money on equipment, measure your room with a 6-foot stick and simulate your swing backswing at the intended setup position. If the stick hits anything, your room is too small for that swing.

The Ideal Room Size

For full-swing use without restriction: 12 feet wide, 18 feet deep, 10 feet tall. This gives you lateral swing room, enough depth for your launch monitor to read the ball accurately (most monitors need 5-8 feet between the monitor and the ball), and headroom for tall golfers. If you can get 12 feet of ceiling height, you eliminate ceiling clearance as a concern for virtually any player at any club.

Ceiling Height Is the Most Critical Dimension

Width and depth can be compensated for with creative setup (angled screen, offset stance). Ceiling height cannot. The highest point of a golf swing for most players is at the top of the backswing, where the butt end of the grip is at roughly 12 to 15 inches above shoulder height. For a 6-foot player, that is roughly 8 feet 6 inches from the floor. Add 6 inches of clearance margin and the minimum useful ceiling height is 9 feet. Ten feet is comfortable for everyone.

Depth and Launch Monitor Placement

Your launch monitor needs distance from the ball to read flight data accurately. Camera-based monitors (GC3, GCQuad) need at least 1 foot behind the ball. Radar-based monitors (Mevo+, Skytrak) need 5-8 feet behind the ball. The ball hits the screen about 3-4 feet in front of the hitting position. So total minimum depth for radar: 5-8 feet behind ball + 1-2 feet at hitting position + 3-4 feet to screen = 9-14 feet. Camera-based setups can fit in as little as 10 feet of depth.

Width for Side Wall Clearance

A standard golf driver swing extends approximately 5 feet to the right of the ball (for right-handed players) at the widest point of the follow-through. Add 2-3 feet for the screen and framing on the right side, and the minimum useful width is 10-11 feet. For left-handed players the numbers flip. Ideally you have 6 feet of clearance on the trailing side (right for right-handers) and 4-5 feet on the lead side.
